The direct antecedent of the Leopold Bloom Award was the Bloom Golem Award, which was given to Ákos Székely by Gábor Tóth in 1998. From 1999 to 2004 the advisory board of Leopold Bloom Foundation awarded the prize annually, on the occasion of the Bloomsday. The award ceremony was often accompanied by Péter Abajkovics' avantgard performance "Lighting hoehandle", in which he did not only reinterpret the local poet, János Káldi's similarly titled poem written in 1970 for the occasion of Mothers' Day, but also the Order of Vitéz founded by Miklós Horthy.
